You’re also able to see an unread email count on the Windows taskbar if you like-perhaps one advantage over using the web interface. You’re able to customize the look of the desktop client in a variety of ways, and there’s a dark mode available too. The interface that WunderMail uses manages to be both straightforward to use and stuffed with functionality: Getting messages starred or archived only takes a single click, for example, while quick actions via swipes are supported too-meaning you can power through your inbox even faster if you’re using a touchscreen laptop or tablet. It’s nicely designed and speedy in use, but only available for Windows right now. WunderMail interfaces tightly with Gmail to bring you just about everything that’s available on the web into the desktop client, including the labels that you’ve set up and the categories that Google’s algorithms automatically sort your messages into. There’s a free version, a $59.95 Pro version, and a $250 Business Pro option, both one-time payments. Key Gmail features from the web interface are carried over, including the option to snooze emails and bring back messages that you’ve just sent, plus support for labels (which are called tags inside the eM Client interface)-and you can integrate the app with your calendars and contacts as well if you need to.ĭownload eM Client for Windows or macOS. Getting your Gmail account connected is really straightforward, too, and only takes a few seconds. You’ve got options covering everything from encryption, to the color scheme of the interface, to whether or not you want emails synced for offline access (handy if you know you’re going to be traveling). It’s available for Windows and macOS, and it’s free for personal use for up to two email accounts. This isn’t a program that’s been specifically designed for Gmail, like Kiwi or Mimestream, but it’s an excellent, all-round program that will capably handle your Gmail inbox and any of the other inboxes you want to plug into it. You can try the app for free for 14 days, but after that you’ll need to sign up for one of the subscription plans.ĭownload Mimestream for macOS, from $4.99 a month after a free trial. You can manage multiple Gmail accounts through the software, and there are some smart integrations with Google Contacts and Google Calendar as well.Īmong the extras offered by Mimestream, you’ll find automatic email tracking protection, as well as the option to see profile pictures from your Apple Contacts app rather than the Google Contacts app, if you prefer. If there’s a feature that Gmail offers, from marking emails as less important to bringing back sent messages, chances are that Mimestream offers it. You get the same labels, filters, and keyboard shortcuts as you do in the web app, all wrapped in a clean and clutter-free interface that puts the focus on your conversation threads. Mimestream is a desktop email client that’s been built specifically with Gmail in mind-though it’s only available on macOS for now. You can’t try out Kiwi for free, just dirt cheap-personal plans start at $2.75 a month, with more features and options available as you go higher.ĭownload Kiwi for Windows or macOS, from $2.75 a month. Icons around the edges of the interface give you access to other Google apps (including Google Calendar and Google Docs), as well as additional Gmail accounts. Keyboard shortcuts are supported as well. While the core Kiwi experience is more or less the same as Gmail on the web, it makes a real difference being freed from the browser: Notifications can be handled by the operating system for example, and you can send files to Gmail straight from File Explorer or Finder. It’s well worth a look if you have both personal and work-related Gmail inboxes, for example, and you can switch between them with a click. Kiwi has a lot of cool Gmail tricks to make use of, not least the clever way that it lets you access emails from several Google accounts inside the same interface. When she wasn’t outwrestling one of her five older brothers, she was helping her parents breed and raise thoroughbreds for the tracks as well as for the mounted division of Ireland’s national police force. For several generations her family was heavily involved with both. Dr.Skehan grew up on a farm in a part of Ireland known for two things: horse racing and military training. Friends and enemies being what they are, we may have need of her particular strategies far sooner than we would like to admit. Put simply, she’s someone I would be loath to face off against, so it seemed prudent to invite her to join Rainbow. She is brave – some would say foolhardy – and she is cunning. Her training regimen is relentless, augmented by the best trainers and the best equipment money can buy. She didn’t get to where she is by cruising on her family’s success. Cohen is someone who lives by a very strict set of rules, and Shah’s very existence calls many of Cohen’s beliefs into question. I suspect this lack of clarity with regards to her motivations is what has already put her at odds with Specialist Eliza “Ash” Cohen, but that was to be expected. Yet her assumption of the name Kali and her ruthlessness toward those who cross her both imply a connection with the country of her ancestors. To the ultra-rich, borders are merely suggestions. ĭoes Shah have any sense of nationalistic pride? It’s difficult to say. And yet if I am consistent in believing that everyone has something to teach, I can’t discount her methods. She excels as a leader, primarily by driving those under her command beyond their psychological and physical breaking points to “forge them anew.” The fact that those who complete her training are then inducted into an inner circle – a society of protectors, as she’s apt to call it – does little to separate her from notorious criminal overlords. She is both ambitious and arrogant, but not without merit. Īs a child, Shah received everything she wanted, without effort or attention. Contrary to what the romantics of this world would have you believe, money does create a boundary that can’t be crossed by any other means. Psychological reportĬultural similarity isn’t always a benefit when undertaking psychoanalysis. Her ruthlessness is legendary, but by becoming a resource the Indian government desperately needs she has circumvented the laws that kept her from her goal and revalidated her self-perception as an unstoppable force in a largely static world. Leaving the military, she created her own Private Security Company to operate within India’s borders, then a Private Military Company, NIGHTHAVEN, to operate overseas. Despite all of her money and all of her social influence, she had found an obstacle between her and something she wanted, and it would not budge. Her interest in martial arts led her to enlist, but she quickly discovered that women weren’t allowed to serve in combat units. This self-assurance hit a brick wall when she tried to join the military. “Acceptance of mediocrity is the first step toward failure.”īorn to wealthy parents, Shah’s ability to achieve her goals was assured from an early age. The crowd that converged under the giant needle of the Washington Monument was a carnival mix of red-hatted Maga aficionados, men dressed like commandos, and a sprinkling of apocalyptic cults. Trump protesters clash with police outside the Capitol. Donald Trump was not about to let the federal government go to war with “his people”, who he had invited to the nation’s capital in a last-ditch effort to reverse his emphatic election defeat, due to be certified by Congress on Wednesday. This appeared to be deliberate, at least in part. On Wednesday, it was close to defenceless. Then, Washington resembled a city under occupation. The contrast with the mass deployments of over 5,000 troops for the Black Lives Matter protests in the summer could not have been more glaring. The plan was to act as relaxed and low-key as possible, presumably so as not to irritate the crowd. It later turned out that the Capitol police had turned down offers of support from the national guard, only calling for reinforcements when it was too late. This was America’s “shining city upon a hill” but only the thinnest blue line was there to guard it at the crucial hour. The protest has turned into an insurrection, breaching the home of US democracy, for the first time since the British army set it on fire in 1814.Įven those who had warned in vain of the Trump crowd’s criminal intent were stunned at how quickly the nation’s defences buckled. Fifteen of these sites are listed as World Heritage Sites (WHS) by UNESCO. The tourist offices of Sarlat ( and les Eyzies ( can give you directions to all the things to see and do in Dordogne Valley and Vézère Valley. The Vézère Valley includes some of the most interesting and famous prehistoric sites in the world, all are located within a radius of 50 kilometers. Next I am very keen to visit the caves of Font-de-Gaume and Lascaux II near Les Eyzies to explore further into prehistoric art. My visit was only a taste of one of the many caves in France that have been named UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The cave has been flooded twice in recent years. The same river is still running, creating continuous fresh air. She explained that 300-metre long cave was formed by an underground river. But the guide told me that the air is natural. I thought the air was controlled by a special air conditioning system. The air inside the cave was very fresh and pleasant, even better than outside. I felt their presence along with their work. I was in deep thought and sensed that I was connecting with those artists, even that their soul was present. The guide patiently explained about claims and discoveries by top archeologists and many findings, several testimonies and items that are displayed in National Museum of Prehistory in Les Eyzies. I questioned the integrity and originality of what we saw. Some of animals do not exist in our time. Was the cave some kind of sanctuary or temple? Was it an art gallery? It is a puzzle, which might be solved by deeper research in several caves in the region.Īs my guide pointed out various figures and scratches, I walked through the narrow passages of the cave and observed engravings of a wild horse, a cave bear, a cave lion and a mammoth. Whatever it is, they are communicating with future generations in various ways through their sketches. We are not certain what their intention was and whether there is any meaning behind it. Their abstract creations are open to all kind of interpretations. I wondered why they went to so much trouble to make these marks? Was it simple curiosity, or some kind of spiritual endeavour? We can only speculate and may never have a definitive answer They were perfect humans, as intelligent and capable as people today, but their world and surroundings were very simple. These revelations show the intellectual and technical abilities of those prehistoric artists. There are no colour paintings in this cave, but traces of dye indicate that they may have originally been in colour. The discovery was an explosive moment in the world of prehistory, revealing nearly 800 drawings, which could be divided into over 100 distinct sets. Scientists officially discovered the cave in 1901. This means that the artists had to crawl inside the cave in absolute darkness holding some kind of lighting in order to make their engravings. It had been excavated and enlarged to make it possible for visitors to walk through more easily. The guide told us that the height of the original cave was very low. We walked through a very narrow passage approximately 1 metre wide. The cave contains prehistoric drawings of animals and symbols on sandy uneven walls. The cave used to be inhabited by Cro-Magnon people (described by scientists as early modern humans) approximately 11,000 – 13,000 years ago. Having spent the night in the city of Sarlat, my journey to the cave of Combarelles near the small town of Les Eyzies-de-Tayac (pictured above), in the heart of the Vézère Valley, took only 20 minutes. The mystery of our life on earth gets even more complicated with new findings going back to 1.7 million years. We can study the marks left by our ancestors and it might be a gateway to the future and understanding our complex universe. We are often so occupied in our day-to-day routines, so busy worrying about paying bills and other ordinary matters that we forget about where we came from. I was very curious to find out about the past. I was looking to connect with those people who created the art works in the Vézère Valley. This trip meant something different to me. The story of the caves captured my mind and inspired me to come back to the area and see them with my own eyes. During my first visit, I had been told about prehistoric caves and paintings. I landed at Brive airport in the Dordogne valley for the second time in a year. But what about the games?” I’m glad you asked, Reader Steve. “That’s great RedWolf, I’m glad you like the buttons. All the controls use microswitches for a more durable, clicky, and arcade-like feel than you’d expect in a $25 novelty game toy. Not to be forgotten is the regular 8-way joystick, which is also very responsive - although any time you throw diagonal controls into the mix, it makes Pac-Man games a little tricky. It makes the experience of playing Pole Position at home actually fun for a change. It feels smooth and responsive, and allows for really nuanced and accurate control of your car in the game. I was shocked when I tried it and learned how incredibly well it actually worked. When you release it, it springs back to a center position. That’s right: for steering in Pole Position, you twist the joystick post itself left and right as if it were a tiny steering wheel. I’m speaking of the “twist control” built into the joystick. Interestingly enough, the feature of this console that I find the downright niftiest also seemed the most gimmicky to me before I tried it. Also, this unit has two regular play buttons instead of only one button found on earlier units, which allows for improved functionality on some games (like using it to shift gears in Pole Position). Try taking a bathroom break from a game of Galaga in the arcade and you’ll see why this is a good feature (of course, pause buttons have been standard on home consoles for years… oh well). And not only that, but when you press the pause button (labeled “Menu”), you are given a choice to either continue the current game or return to the main menu. The unit also has a really neat feature that is a drastic improvement from Jakks’ earlier TV games: a pause button. Pac-Man, Pole Position, Galaga, Xevious, and Mappy Land) with the built-in joystick and buttons. It’s easy to select from any of the five included games ( Ms. The built-in game selection menu is professional and nicely done. But the true beauty of this puppy comes when you install four AA batteries, hook it up to the RCA phono jacks on your TV and switch it on. Pac-Man Collection is probably about $25, but I paid $15, so I am happy. For starters, the console’s presentation is appropriate for the casual player that is likely to buy it: nostalgic and fun. Jakks Pacific got just about everything right with this unit. And being the picky vintage game enthusiast I am (as some might have noticed by my harsh NEX review), this is a miraculous thing. Sure, this thing has probably been reviewed to death by now, but I really wanted to share with you how cool I think this thing is. I have the venerable Atari TV Games unit that looks like a vintage Atari 2600 joystick, the highly underrated and very hackable Commodore 64 30-in-1 unit, the Namco 5-in-1 unit (with Pac-Man, Galaxian, etc), and of course, the subject of this mini-review, Jakks Pacific’s Namco TV Games – Ms. So far I am an owner of four “TV Games” units. |
